Terms of Use

Last updated: 2 August 2026

Plain terms. PassPony is a tool you run on your own device with your own keys and your own store. It is provided as-is. You are responsible for your keys and your backups — because no one else can be.

The software

PassPony is a client application for the pass and passage password-store formats. It runs entirely on your device and operates on data and keys you supply. It is not a hosted service and creates no account.

Your responsibilities

  • Keys and passphrases. You are responsible for safeguarding your encryption keys and any passphrases protecting them. If you lose your keys, no one — including us — can recover your encrypted data. That is the design.
  • Backups. Keep an independent, exportable backup of your keys and store. PassPony's restore path assumes you can re-supply your keys.
  • Lawful use. Use PassPony in compliance with the laws that apply to you.

No warranty

PassPony is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. You use it at your own risk.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developer shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages, or for any loss of data, arising out of or relating to your use of or inability to use PassPony.

Interoperability

PassPony aims for byte-faithful compatibility with the pass, passage, gpg, and age tools, verified by an automated test suite. It is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the authors of those tools.

Changes

These terms may be updated; the current version is always posted here. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
